About Brenda Schmidt
Forward, Watercolor, 30X22 in, 1994 The artist on the prairiesI grew up on a farm in the Coteau Hills in southern Saskatchewan where I developed a deep connection with the natural world. The need to paint and write emerged at an early age and, thanks to my parents, I was never without paper or paint. I cannot remember a time when I was not an artist. I won my first awards and sold my first paintings as a teenager, and as a teen I won my first writing award and had about 40 short stories, poems, and sketches published in the YC pages of the Western Producer. The artist in the northI moved from the prairies to the boreal forest in 1985. I worked as a nurse in Flin Flon Manitoba for 13 years before moving on to work as a full-time artist and writer. During that time I received many awards for painting and my paintings were included in group and solo exhibitions in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. I received first place in the Manitoba Nurses' Union writing competition in 1989. In 1998, I graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Arts, English (Dean's Honours List). During my time in this mining community I've explored many new landscapes and, as a result, a series of paintings and poems developed on the theme of isolation. My first book of poetry A Haunting Sun was published by Thistledown Press in 2001.
