Birding Trip Reports

This immature Great Horned Owl watched us from a stump in a coulee in the Coteau Hills. We didn't notice the owl until it moved because we had walked too close to its perch.

Birding Hotspots

Canada is home to a great number of bird species, and the western provinces, Saskatchewan in particular, have many birding hotspots and few people to detract from the birding experience.

Great Birding Near Flin Flon and Creighton

  • The Pine Root bridge on the old highway near Flin Flon is a great place to spot warblers. We have heard an Oven Bird singing there on many occasions. Check back for a more complete list of hotspots, which is currently being compiled.
  • On the highway between The Pas and Swan River, near Lake Winnipegosis there is an unmarked road on the lake side where several species of warblers can be found.
  • In the trees along the highway between Creighton and Denare Beach we often spot Swainson's Thrush and several species of warblers and flycatchers.

Hot Spots in Saskatchewan

  • Luck Lake is a prime spot to see a great number of species of shorebirds. In the fall the whooping crane has been spotted there as well, and we were lucky enough to see one in the fall of 2000, feeding with a flock of sandhills in a dry creek bed north of Luck Lake.
  • Cypress Hills is the home of many species including the Pink-sided Junco.
  • Quill and Chaplin Lakes are two of the best spots in North America for shorebirds. Check out Quill Lakes International Bird Area in Saskatchewan.

Keep checking - our hotspots page will soon be revised. If you spot a bird that you would like us to know about, or if you know of a great place to bird, please email us.
